Most businesses in Qatar have a small budget to start with and two big options: ads on Google, or ads on Facebook and Instagram. That's the Google Ads vs Meta Ads choice, and picking the wrong one first doesn't just waste money. It can convince you that "ads don't work" when the channel was simply wrong for what you sell.
I manage the Google Ads account for a car rental brand in Doha, and I've run 114 Meta Ads lead campaigns for car rental, garage and property brands in Qatar and Bahrain. The numbers above come from those accounts. They measure different things, so they're not a straight race. But they show clearly what each platform is good at.
The short answer: it comes down to search intent
Is anyone already searching for what you sell? This one question decides most Google Ads vs Meta Ads cases. Open Google and type what a customer would type: "car rental Doha", "AC repair Al Wakrah", "dentist in Lusail". If you see ads and plenty of results, people are already searching. That's search intent, and Google Ads is built to catch it.
If nobody would search for what you sell yet, because it's new, visual or an impulse buy, Google Ads has nothing to catch. That's where Meta Ads comes in. It puts what you sell in front of people who weren't looking, and gets them interested.
Google Ads catches demand that already exists. Meta Ads creates demand that doesn't exist yet.
When Google Ads in Qatar is the better start
Start with Google Ads when the need is urgent and people search for it by name:
- Rentals and bookings: car rental, hotels, tours, event venues
- Repairs and emergencies: garages, AC repair, plumbers, locksmiths
- Health and professional services: clinics, dentists, lawyers, accountants
- B2B services: anything a company manager would search for at their desk
For the car rental account, a 9.6% click-through rate across all campaigns shows what that match looks like. Someone searches for a car, sees an ad that answers exactly that search, and clicks. Google Ads in Qatar works when the ad, the keyword and the landing page all say the same thing.
When Facebook ads and Instagram ads win
Start with Meta Ads when people need to see your product before they want it, or when your best leads come from a conversation:
- Restaurants and cafes: food sells with a photo, not a keyword
- Deals and launches: a new branch, a seasonal deal, an opening
- Property: people browse homes on Instagram long before they search
- Events, salons, fashion and anything visual
In Qatar, Facebook ads and Instagram ads work best when they open a WhatsApp chat. Across my 114 lead campaigns, 9,016 of the 10,163 leads were WhatsApp chats. I wrote up the full comparison in click-to-WhatsApp ads vs lead forms.
Google Ads vs Meta Ads, side by side
| Google Ads | Meta Ads | |
|---|---|---|
| The customer | Is already searching | Isn't looking yet |
| You pay for | Clicks from people who searched | Reach, chats or form leads |
| Best lead type | Calls, bookings, website forms | WhatsApp chats, instant forms |
| Creative | Text ads that repeat the search | Posters, carousels and Reels |
| Common mistake | Broad keywords, no negative list | Boosted posts, tired creative |
Why many businesses in Qatar end up running both
In the end, Google Ads vs Meta Ads isn't always a choice between the two. They do different jobs, so they help each other. Meta Ads makes people aware of you. Later, when they need you, they search on Google and recognise your name. And people who visited your site from Google can be shown your Instagram ads afterwards, so they come back.
The car rental brand in my numbers runs both. But that's where you end up, not where you start. With a small budget, split across two platforms, neither gets enough data to learn.
A simple way to decide
- Search for your own serviceIf Google shows ads and plenty of results, there's search intent. Lean towards Google Ads.
- Ask how customers find you todayIf most of them say "I saw you on Instagram" or message you on WhatsApp, lean towards Meta Ads.
- Check what you can handleGoogle Ads brings calls and forms. Meta Ads brings WhatsApp chats that need fast replies. Pick the one your team can answer.
- Run one channel properly for a monthEnough budget to learn, conversion tracking set up from day one, and leads counted, not just clicks.
- Then add the secondOnce one channel brings leads at a cost you're happy with, add the other.
